PERSPECTIVES VOLUME 4
Mobility is a prime example of the tremendous power of consumerization to transform business. Before we had the time to think twice as business leaders, as consumers we all had smartphones in our hands. While we were taking a breath to figure out how they changed the way we work and the way we should interact with consumers, the iPad transformed the tablet market and created a new form factor and an explosion of new applications. The social media juggernaut took on a new dimension on these mobile platforms. All of these devices and applications transformed our personal lives. And the pace of change shows no signs of slowing.

In the same way that urban planners talk of pace layering, business leaders must find a way to adapt to the rapid changes that mobility has wrought.
What can enterprises do to adapt and seize the myriad of opportunities that come with mobility?
If an IT department fully embraces mobility and the changes it brings, it will have become consumerized and the business will reap massive benefits. A variety of issues must be addressed for the full value of mobility to be realized, some of which include the following:
- Supporting mobility while keeping data safe and secure
- Ensuring a quality user experience for both employees and consumers is going to change the way that applications are built
- Mobility will change business processes as different types of tasks migrate to the people and locations best suited for them
To handle these challenges, IT will have to be managed differently. The goals of secure, reliable and speedy access to the best computing resources remain the same, but new skills, processes and technology are required. New approaches to IT Service Management, new methods of managing devices and new ways of building applications all represent a starting point on a long journey.
Is your organization ready to go mobile?
In this issue of Perspectives, we explore Enterprise Mobility as we look at the different ways that the world of business and the IT systems that support it will be transformed by the world of mobility.
We examine the following:
- How the network, applications and data protection solutions will be transformed by mobility
- The platforms and processes needed in the transformation process
- The manner in which this transformation affects the banking, insurance, manufacturing and retail industries
